dc.description.abstract | Distillation and Reverse-Osmosis have been two conventional desalination methods, which consume significant amounts of thermal and electric energy. When waste or inexpensive heat sources are available, membrane distillation (MD) can be efficiently used for the same purpose. In this paper, we studied vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) for seawater desalination with respect to temperature, vacuum pressure, and seawater concentration. This research was to confirm VMD functionality for desalination. We confirmed that flux of DSW was smaller than that of DIW with small differences. Theoretical prediction using flat sheet membranes reasonably agreed with experimental observation. Based on the results, we think that proper concentration range can optimize future VMD desalination processes.ciently used for the same purpose.
