In the NOWPAP region, there were severe oil spills in 1997 Nahodka and 2007 Hebei Spirits Spill with direct/indirect devastating effect on wildlife. Oiled wildlife, mainly birds and marine mammals, have been suffered on pathological (skin, toe skin lesion) and physiological/biochemical damage (liver/kidney injury, malfunction). In order to mitigate the damage on the wildlife, we reviewed the current status and collected existing data on oiled wildlife including impact cases, relevant response techniques for rescuing and relevant national laws/policies and regulations, guidelines concerning oiled wildlife from the NOWPAP members (China, Japan, Korea and Russia). Even though, some countries have developed rescuetraining center with training program and guideline/manual to rescue oiled wildlife, all NOWPAP members still don’t have any legal system and relevant response exercise for oiled wildlife. In addition, there are not enough the expertise, funding and system of practical response to bird contamination regarding the oiled wildlife. Accordingly, MERRAC have conducted developing a technical report on oiled wildlife in the NOWPAP region under the specific project. Further MERRAC is requested to share and develop rescue methods, public awareness and education, building a platform for experts to communicate and share experience and information on oiled wildlife preparedness, response and management as a follow up.-
