dc.description.abstractThe magnitude of roll motion of floating structures is depend on the roll damping value acting on the body. In other words, the roll damping of floating structure must be accurately obtained in order to precisely evaluate the roll motion. There are several methods to estimate roll damping of floating structures such as linear potential theory, computational fluid dynamic(CFD) and model test. However, due to the limitation of ignoring the viscous effect in the linear potential theory, it is hard to evaluate the roll motion of ship attaching appendages such as bilge keel. Among these methods, the model tests based on free decay test and harmonic excited roll motion(HERM) are known as the most reliable method to estimate roll damping of the floating structures. In this study, model tests using free decay and HERM techniques were performed in the Ocean Engineering Basin(OEB) of the KRISO, roll damping results were estimated based on the post-processing methods of both techniques and roll damping results of various types of midship section were compared.-
