dc.description.abstract | Grateloupia asiatica, G. subpectinata and G. divaricata are exploited as food materials in eastern coast of Korea. Those alga are over exploited and short of supply due to lack of aquaculture techniques. Knowledge about the best irradiancecondition in tank culture is essential for development of a seedling production technique. We tested growth of G. asiatica under different irradiances by 0.4, 20, 40 and 160 μmol m-2s-1. Water temperature was 20±3 ℃ which was known goodfor growth of this alga by previous experiment. Average length after 30 days of culture was 5.6, 5.7, 18.1 and 17.0 mm respectively. SGR was -0.2, 2.0, 4.4 and 5.1 %day-1 during the 30 days of culture. Therefore, good irradiance for this alga was 40 to 160 μmol m-2s-1. This means seedling of G. asiatica perfers mild to bright light of broad range. This result can be applied to the development of culture technique. After this experiment, cultured G asiatica were transferred to a 1 ton size culture tank. The tank were designed to circulate deep seawater using air bubbles and gravitational force along the V shaped bottom. Dishes of G. asiatica were rotated about 10~20 cm/s. After 3 months of culture, thalliwere grown up to 5 cm length. Compared to previous normal seawater culture(~1cm during 6 months), this culture technique resulted almost 5 times bigger thalli.
