dc.description.abstractOTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) is one of the renewable energy technologies that is likely to take charge of the base load as marine energy with little fluctuation. However, it is still in the stage of research and development, the MW-level demonstration project for commercialization is undergoing a detailed design from 2010 to 2015 and is being implemented as a national project from 2016 to 2020. Currently, we are selecting target sites where 1MW OTEC demonstration plant is installed. The environmental impact assessment that can occur during installation and operation is carried out in accordance with EIA regulations of Kiribati through site investigation and data analysis. In this study, ocean carbon dioxide mapping of Tarawa coastal waters were analyzed by the field survey and modelled data for the environmental impact assessment by OTEC installation. Ocean carbon dioxide survey was conducted to acquire data to 1,000m depth using CONTROS HydroC CO₂ (Kongsberg, Germany). As a result, we were able to grasp the characteristics of the ocean CO₂ in coastal waters of an OTEC installation. A key factor in understanding both the environment impact of a plume from an OTEC system and how to design appropriate monitoring tools is an understanding of the dispersal of a CO₂ plume in seawater.
