dc.description.abstract | A new concept of a full-electrified ferry for passenger and car considering Korean environmental conditions is introduced in this article. The vessel is the most significant player in the international and domestic transport industry. Thus it is obvious that the vessel is one of the key players for environmental changes all over the world. Nowadays, emissions from ocean-going ships are regarded as the causes of acid rain and global climate change. Even these emissions from ships are suspected to be harmful to human health. In line with this, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set regulations in 2001 for future emissions of GHG from international marine transport to make the shipping process cleaner and greener. Moreover, in April 2018, IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) adopted an initial strategy to reduce GHG emissions from ocean-going ships, setting out a vision to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping and phase them out, as soon as possible in the future. This strategy contains that the total GHG emissions from the maritime transport sections should be reduced by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. In these circumstances, different types of full-electrified ferries have been successfully developed and tested in several centuries. Most of the full-electrified ferries ever tested have the fast charging systems at the dock on each shore to recharge the electric power of the ferries just after every short one way travel. And these fast-charging systems on the dock should use high-voltage and high-current in the system, which is installed very near water. However, it is challenging to keep the fast-charging stations in the usable conditions under harsh seashore environments in which big tide differences exist, and frequent typhoons pass by. Therefore, a new type of full-electrified car ferry concept is developed to be used in such a harsh seashore condition. | - |
