- Abstract
- A land-island bridge, linking Goha Island to the mainland of which the connection point is Mokpo is going to be built. Any specific guideline for the bridge construction in a navigable waterway is not in South Korea although many requirement are made by the local authority. Examples of vessel collision with bridges are examined to understand a cause of vessel collisions and to look for a guideline in bridge design. For understanding the risk of bridge structure crossing coastal waterways, an interaction between vessel traffic and bridge is investigated through a survey of hazardous traffic situation under the Osaka harbor bridge in Osaka Harbor. The main span length is 510m, less than two times the design vessel length, but the horizontal clearance of the span is about 280m that is less far more than the span length because the bridge is a cantilever truss type. Although a risk in vessel traffic exists and is resulted from geometry of waterway and bridge structure, it can be said that the navigation channel has been upgraded to overcome vulnerability of existing bridge. It is expected that an adequate distance of the navigation span should be decided to minimize in a cost-effective manner the risk of a bridge to vessel collision.
