dc.description.abstractWe depict the physical limitations of underwater acoustic networks which will be make hard to adapt key technologies used in terrestial wireless network to underwater acoustic networks. We show the network performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in the DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) mode, that is a basic international protocol of wireless LAN, in underwater environments. We suggest the modified MAC protocol based on IEEE 802.11 that removes DIFS and SIFS which are useful to prevent packet collision in traditional wireless network through the result of performance analysis. Using the analysis result of IEEE 802.11 MAC and the modified MAC protocol, we consider the applicable possibility of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol for underwater acoustic networks.-
