▶ Green mobility contract department established in cooperation with UST

▶ Applications Open on October 5, 2021, for admission in March 2022

The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering(KRISO, President Booki Kim) newly established the Green Mobility Contract Department(I-CORE) in cooperation with the University of Science and Technology(UST, President Ieehwan Kim). Applications will open on October 5, 2021, with the goal of cultivating master’s and doctorate graduates for the development of advanced technology related to eco-friendly ships.

* I-CORE : Industry Cooperation Research Education, the brand name of UST contract departments

UST is an educational institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT and the sole national research institute graduate program university in Korea that enables educational functionality to 32 national research institutes and produces master’s and doctorate graduates in science and technology fields.

Contract departments are demand specific graduate programs for the cultivation of talent that companies seek in cooperation with other companies. KRISO plans to foster human resources in the field of green mobility, which is expected to see a rise in demand for manpower, by nurturing multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art research talent who can respond to international regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

Students admitted to this program directly participate in the development of eco-friendly ships and national research and development projects and receive tuition scholarship from companies to learn in world class research and development environments. They also receive full scholarship and pay benefits.

Companies participating in the established contract department are planned to be expanded to 3 companies, including Genohco, which was listed on KOSDAQ in March 2021, Duratek, and KTE. Through ongoing discussion with the corresponding companies, the KRISO campus established courses based on the demands of companies, including electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, field applications of marine control systems, data measurement and programming.

The first class of students will be admitted to the KRISO Daejeon campus in March 2022 and the graduate program will continue at the Mokpo research site starting in 2023 when the eco-friendly demonstration ship and infrastructure are completed.

KRISO President Booki Kim said, “We aim to further advance together with local regions and companies and attain world class eco-friendly ship technology through a curriculum specialized in eco-friendly ships and the cultivation of master’s and doctorate graduates capable of multidisciplinary convergence.”

Mokpo City Mayor Kim Jong-Sik said, “We welcome the KRISO Mokpo research site of the UST Green Mobility department and believe that this will be a turning point for regional development and attraction of eco-friendly related high-tech companies. We will do our best to support the fostering of outstanding manpower and the development of advanced eco-friendly ship technologies.”

KRISO plans to further expand the participation of more specialized companies in the Green Mobility department and lead the development of eco-friendly ship technology, still in its early stages, globally through the fostering of master’s and doctorate level manpower in consideration of the demands of companies and global megatrends.
