KRISO and H2KOREA join hands to promote Marine Green Hydrogen Ecosystem

- Signed MOU for mutual cooperation in marine green hydrogen field -

□ A government-funded research institute in ships and ocean engineering and a leading institute that spearheads the promotion and nurturing of the country's hydrogen industry have joined hands to provide intensive support to the government's new and renewable green energy policy.

□ On the 3rd, the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO led by President Booki Kim) and the Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2KOREA led by Chairman Moon Jae-Do) signed an MOU to strengthen mutual cooperation in the marine green hydrogen field at the H2KOREA conference room.

□ This MOU aims to promote and facilitate the production and distribution of marine green hydrogen, thereby speeding up the implementation of the hydrogen economy, which is essential to effectively responding to climate change.

□ Marine green hydrogen refers to the hydrogen generated using marine new and renewable energy sources, including offshore wind power and wave power. It has been drawing significant attention as one of the key resources to lead the eco-friendly energy market going forward because it is eco-friendly and limitless.

□ The signing ceremony was performed while thoroughly observing the COVID-19 health protocols issued by the government, which was attended by Booki Kim, President of KRISO; Jong-Su Choi, Division Head of KRISO; Moon Jae-Do, Chairman of H2KOREA; and Sung-bok KIM, CEO of H2KOREA.

□ Among major countries leading the hydrogen economy, the EU, Norway, and the UK are actively engaging in the production and supply of green hydrogen using offshore wind power, while Japan and other countries are working on the pilot operation of hydrogen carriers.

□ The government has been conducting full-cycle demonstration projects for green hydrogen using offshore wind power in Jejudo Island in line with its 2050 Net-zero Strategy and the Korean New Deal. A feasibility study on hydrogen carriers, which will ensure a stable supply of hydrogen, has also been underway as a part of a government project.

□ The signing of this MOU by the two parties will ensure △ cooperation in R&D activities for marine green hydrogen, △ cooperation in improving relevant regulations and systems, and △ cooperation in strengthening the industrial network for the advancement of the industrial sector. These efforts will contribute to promoting the government's policies, establishing a green hydrogen ecosystem, and further promoting related R&D activities.

□ Moon Jae-Do, the Chairman of H2KOREA, said, "The MOU we signed today is particularly significant in that we have reached a consensus that implementing the production and supply of green hydrogen requires robust support from the ships and ocean engineering sector. This MOU will serve as a stepping stone to encourage both parties to grow together and establish an ecosystem for the promotion of marine green hydrogen."

□ Booki Kim, the President of KRISO, said, "A wide consensus has been reached over the transition toward the low-carbon hydrogen economy across society. I hope this occasion will allow the two parties to actively cooperate with each other in performing future R&D activities and improving relevant regulations and systems. By doing so, the two parties will be able to take the lead in establishing a green energy ecosystem as leading players in the marine green hydrogen sector."
