KRISO Signed an MOU with KHNP for Commercialization of Marine Energy Technologies

KRISO and KHNP signed MOU for commercialization of marine energy technologies and clean power generation on February 21, 2024.

The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) held each other’s hands to develop clean power generation technologies using marine energy.

KRISO and KHNP entered into a memorandum of understanding(MOU) in Daejeon on the 21st, to mutually cooperate to demonstrate and commercialize technologies for producing and supplying marine energy and marine green hydrogen.

Under the MOU, they will collaborate to develop commercialized technologies in the fields of production and transportation of marine green hydrogen; demonstrate clean power plants using marine energy and discover relevant business models and exchange carbon negative technologies using marine energy.

So far, KRISO has continuously carried out R&D on power generation technologies using marine energy sources including wave power, seawater temperature difference, and offshore wind power. In addition, KRISO has produced excellent accomplishments in the field of marine energy, for example by developing an offshore platform for producing hydrogen and ammonia using electric power produced from eco-friendly energy sources.

Two parties plan to cooperate in demonstrating marine energy power generation platforms based on wave power and offshore wind power on KRISO’s wave energy test site. Furthermore, the production and supply business model for marine green hydrogen will be made.

KRISO is looking forward to creating synergic effects through cooperation with KHNP, Korea's largest power generation company, increasing the competitiveness of Korea's marine renewable energy technology and discovering new research areas such as temperature difference power generation using heated wastewater from power plants.

Sang-Jo Yoon, the executive vice president of KHNP, said, “We will continuously cooperate with KRISO so that various non-carbon energy sources such as marine energy may increase in harmony with existing power plants based on nuclear power, hydrogen, and renewable energy sources.”

Kim Jin, the vice president of KRISO, said “Encountering the carbon-neutral era, many countries around world are reducing the use of fossil fuels and focusing on renewable energy. KRISO will closely cooperate with KHNP to take the lead in the clean energy conversion and hydrogen economy of Korea.”
